School AIDS Education Programme

Youth and adolescents are vulnerable to HIV infection due to various social factors, like their age characteristics, inquisitive nature m, for experiment, availability of injecting drugs, high risk behaviour. On the other hand they can play the role of ambassador in the fight against HIV AIDS. In the student friendly initiative DSACS in collaboration with Deptt. of Education , GNCTD has been implementing School AIDS Education Programme. In the programme sessions are conducted for students from standard VI to std X , XII. The sessions cover the topic like grown up, HIV /AIDS, STD, tackling peer pressure, and safe practices to prevent AIDS. Besides class room session there are activities like painting competition, debate competition, film show, parent teacher meeting on the subject. At the first step of the SAEP an advocacy workshop is conducted for the Principals and vice principals of the school. The top management of the school are being sensitized about the need, requirement and importance of the programme. It is also conveyed to consider the programme as integral part of school activity. Nodal teachers and peer educators are selected from the each to implement the in a more organized way. SAEP has been implemented in Delhi for last six years. Most of the government, government aided schools have been covered. It is expected that through this programme the student the adolescent will be able to learn about grown up & can assist themselves during the changes in this life span.
